Columbia in Case
The model of Columbia, America’s Cup Defender, is plank on
frame construction of museum quality. The planked deck shows excellent
craftsmanship.
The Columbia was designed by Nathanael
Greene Herreschoft, the famous American designer and built by Herreschoft
Manufacturing Company in Bristol, Rhode Island. L.O.A. 40.15 m and mast 30.10 m
Columbia became a legend as the first boat to win two America’s Cup matches in
succession. In 1899 Columbia defeated Shamrock owned by Sir Thomas Lipton.
Again in 1901 Columbia won the three race contest against the Irish Shamrock II
with a lead of one minute and 11 seconds, in the closest race that had ever been
held for the America’s Cup. Captained by Charlie Barr and a remarkably
well-trained crew, Columbia was unbeatable. The yacht Columbia represents the
American dominance in the early years of the America’s Cup races.
