Gaff Rigged Cutter
The 1940’s model of the Gaffed Rigged Cutter has a carved hull with straight
keel and rounded forefoot. The deck is scored, the cabin has metal port holes,
and there are deck cleats and an anchor on the bow. The model and rigging are in
excellent condition. This model would be a great choice to begin a collection of
sailing ships.
In the 19th century, the gaff rig cutter
was used extensively for off shore fisheries of the Grand Banks, Newfoundland
and Northern Europe. The versatility of the ship made it ideal as a pilot
boat. It was used for this purpose in the Bristol Channel, England as well as
the port of New York. After long service as a pilot cutter, many of these boats
were used as cruising yachts.
