The HMS Victory is best known for her role in the Battle of
Trafalgar, which took place in 1805. Admiral Horatio Nelson decisively defeated
the Franco- Spanish fleet. This triumph is seen as one of the most decisive
naval battles under sail in British history. The HMS Victory is a three mast
fully rigged ship. She was designed by Sir Thomas Slade, a naval architect, to
carry at least 100 guns. In practice, her armament varied from 104 to 106 guns
and carronades. Six thousand trees, 90% oak with remainder of elm, pine and
fir were used to build the ship. The HMS Victory was launched in 1765 after the
French sided with America. The HMS Victory is the oldest naval ship still in
commission, and sits in dry dock in Portsmouth, England as a museum ship.
